
Bates College sophomore Will Boe-Wiegaard won the New England Small College Athletic Conference men's tennis singles title for the second consecutive year, defeating Middlebury's Nate Edmunds, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at Williams on Sunday.
Edmunds, who was named the NESCAC Player of the Year earlier in the weekend, defeated Boe-Wiegaard '07 (Georgetown, Conn.) earlier this season. Boe-Wiegaard has now defeated the NESCAC Player of the Year in the championship match to claim both of his conference titles.
After dropping the first set in the quarterfinal round, Boe-Wiegaard came back to defeat Amherst's Josh Rilla 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, then breezed through the semifinals, beating Bowdoin's Macafee Burke 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
Middlebury won the team title with 29 points, three points ahead of Williams. Bates finished in fifth place with 13.66.
Tristan Beach '06 (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Blake Wayman '05 (Concord, N.H.) had a solid weekends for the Bobcats, advancing to the semifinal round of the second doubles draw. Michael Hoverman '04 (Warwick, N.Y) and Rob Weller '05 (Penn Valley, Pa.) advanced to the semifinal round of the third doubles draw for Bates.
The Bobcats now await word on selections for the NCAA Team Championships.
